correction from last time: regarding [math]\displaystyle{ 0 }[/math]-smoothing vs. [math]\displaystyle{ 1 }[/math]-smoothing
(A way to remember the smoothings: Call the bottom strand 'level [math]\displaystyle{ 0 }[/math]' and the top strand 'level [math]\displaystyle{ 1 }[/math]'. Then, for the [math]\displaystyle{ k }[/math]-th smoothing enter the 'interchange' at level [math]\displaystyle{ k }[/math] and turn right).
