Where do mathematicians/scientists pick up tools such as Mathematica, LaTeX, ...? Do you just have to look around and learn on your own?

Mathematica is rather expensive though comparable to a couple of textbooks; around $200 in the UofT bookstore, for students. TeX is free; see e.g. http://www.miktex.org/. As for learning to use these things, you mostly learn from practice on your own. --Drorbn 06:26, 6 December 2006 (EST)
