According to some books, matrix &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;\begin{pmatrix}1&amp;amp;3&amp;amp;2&amp;amp;4&amp;amp;2\\0&amp;amp;1&amp;amp;2&amp;amp;3&amp;amp;4\\0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;1&amp;amp;2\\0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;0 \end{pmatrix}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; is good enough to show that the rank of the matrix is 3.  This is because the first three rows are linearly independent, they can&amp;#039;t form linear combination for preceeding rows.  Anyone could tell why we have to reduce it to &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;\begin{pmatrix}1&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;-4&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;-2\\0&amp;amp;1&amp;amp;2&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;-2\\0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;1&amp;amp;2\\0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;0&amp;amp;0 \end{pmatrix}&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;?
